Elsa's character development was inspired by Jessica Lange's fascination with the carnival world and loosely based on World War II entertainer Marlene Dietrich, a figure Lange had long wanted to portray. There she married Michael Beck and became a TV star, but years later realized her life was hopeless after learning all her friends had been murdered. With her amputation tape about to go public, she agreed to perform on Halloween night, where Edward Mordrake killed her. In the afterlife, she reconciled with Ethel and performed to a cheering audience.
